About Sport Event Denmark

Sport Event Denmark is the nation’s sports event organization, established and supported by the Danish Government. It creates value by uniting people through the hosting of world-class sporting events, including world and European championships and major congresses across a variety of sports. Through its close collaboration with host cities and national governing bodies, it ensures that each event builds on the success of the previous one. With over 250 events hosted in the last decade, it positions Denmark as one of the leading international sports event destinations in the world – and as a valued partner to the global sports industry.

Supported by the Danish Ministry of Culture, the organisation adopts a cooperative model known as the “event triangle” where three stakeholders – Sport Event Denmark, the host city and the relevant national federation – unite to deliver an entire an event, from bid to execution. Sport Event Denmark provides expertise, advice, and funding; the host city offers finance, logistics, and promotion, while the sports federation handles technical and commercial tasks such as ticketing and sponsorship.

When selecting events, Sport Event Denmark considers factors such as expected international visitors, opportunities for community engagement, the sport’s popularity, and not least, whether the event will leave a sustainable legacy. The sustainable event model encompasses ‘inclusive volunteering’ – encouraging individuals with disabilities to offer their services — and the use of local, sustainable materials for event infrastructure. Many events also drive wider economic growth through business tourism and networking opportunities.

Event planning draws on Denmark’s strong grassroots sector, engaging local sports clubs to help build capacity. In addition to volunteering, community involvement comes through other formats such as allowing amateur runners to compete alongside elite athletes. Events often mirror local values. During the Tour de France Grand Départ in Denmark, for example, cycling reflected the nation’s bicycle culture, with extensive public participation showcasing host cities’ identities.

Sport Event Denmark’s mission is to maintain and strengthen Denmark’s position as a leading host nation, while ensuring the best experience for participants, spectators, and communities.
