About DGI

DGI, the Danish Gymnastics and Sports Associations, is a primary sponsor of Inspired by Denmark and a driving force behind many of our featured projects.

Founded in 1861, DGI developed as an important part of the civil society movement. The voluntary engagement of people organised in local sports associations has been the cornerstone of the organisation’s wide reach across Denmark. In 1992, the merger of two grassroots sports organisations created the DGI we know it today. It now represents more than 6,700 sports clubs and associations, with a collective membership exceeding 1.9 million.

DGI has a long-standing tradition of both drawing inspiration from, and contributing inspiration to, international exchanges. From its early days, collaboration with neighbouring countries and more distant nations was central to developing gymnastics training methods and strengthening civil-society-based sports organisations. In 1994, DGI invited partners and like-minded organisations to discuss the need for stronger international collaboration and networking among grassroots sport and recreational physical activity. This led to the foundation of the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA) in 1995.

Since its foundation, DGI has been a leading advocate for community-based physical activity, working with local clubs and associations to develop initiatives and programmes for its members. It is also one of the country’s largest educational institutions, providing sport, health and self-improvement training to around 50,000 people each year. Its influence extends to the organisation of numerous national projects and events such as Move for Life, DGI Esport, The ABCs of Mental Health, We Walk, Royal Run, and many more.

The inauguration of DGI Byen in Copenhagen in 1997 was a major milestone in the organisation’s history. Located next to the central train station, this multisport facility offered local residents access to modern, affordable facilities in the heart of the capital. The success of DGI Byen paved the way for the establishment of similar state-of-the-art facilities across the country.

Although DGI has expanded its portfolio to include a variety of new initiatives, its main objective remains the promotion of community sport, fitness and well-being among Danish residents. At its core, DGI is dedicated to spreading the joy of movement and empowering sports associations to drive positive change throughout society.
