The Cycling Embassy of Denmark (CED) is an organisation committed to sharing Danish cycling expertise across the globe. Established in 2009, the CED draws upon the experience of cycling experts from local authorities, NGOs, community groups and the private sector to share best-practice knowledge with towns and cities around the world.
Drawing on more than a century of Danish experience, the CED’s primary aim is to share best-practice knowledge on creating bike and people-friendly cities. Its expertise spans areas such as integrating cycling with public transport, constructing safe bike infrastructure and delivering effective campaigns that inspire people to cycle. The CED also shares examples and practical advice on policy development, urban planning and campaign strategies, alongside guidance on infrastructure such as public bicycle pumps, cycle counters and parking facilities.
The CEO sees cycling is a key component in meeting urban challenges resulting from decades of car-oriented planning, such as congestion, air pollution, physical inactivity and cramped public spaces. While Copenhagen is generally flat, the embassy also draws on experience from topography in cities like Aarhus and Randers to offer advice on how to minimise the demands of uphill routes.
The embassy also offers a variety of hands-on services both in Denmark and abroad, including lectures, guided bike tours, masterclasses and presentations at international conferences . Each year, the CED’s Leadership Award for Cycling Promotion honours an individual or an organization for their work in the promotion of cycling.
