With a background in education and sports administration, Søren Ørgaard has played a key role in shaping community sports initiatives and non-formal education in Denmark. He currently serves as Director of the Danish Institute for Sports Studies (IDAN), the Danish Institute for Non-Formal Education (Vifo), and the international sports and ethics organisation Play the Game.
Ørgaard began his career as a teacher before moving into sports development in 2006, when he was appointed Playmaker at Aalborg Municipality – a newly created role aimed at promoting physical activity, and building stronger connections between schools and community organisations. He later took on broader responsibilities, including the oversight of large-scale sports-related construction projects. During this period, he also served as Chairman of the Danish Leisure Council. In 2023, Ørgaard became Head of Aalborg Sports Park, where he was responsible for the operation and development of the city’s sports facilities, including major venues such as GIGANTIUM and Aalborg Stadium.
He currently holds multiple roles across three key institutions highlighting his strong commitment to the study of sport, non-formal education, and the promotion of democratic values.
