About The Danish Outdoor Council

Founded in 1942, the Danish Outdoor Council (Friluftsrådet) is a national organisation dedicated to promoting outdoor recreation, nature conservation and community wellbeing. With members including sports federations, youth groups, and environmental associations, the Council serves as a unifying force for the promotion of outdoor activities across the country. Through a variety of projects, it provides funding, resources, and knowledge to more than 80 member organizations, building new networks and infrastructure and allowing more people to explore the natural environment.  It is also a strong advocate for sustainable development and greater access to the countryside.

Notably, the Outdoor Council manages schemes like the Blue Flag, Green Flag, and Green School programmes, all of which promote environmental awareness and outdoor participation across communities. It also spearheads the development of new natural parks and recreational trails, such as the Clover Trails (Kløverstier) – a large network of signposted pathways close to towns and cities that make it easier for urban-dwellers to go walking and cycling.

In collaboration with the Danish Nature Conservation Society, the Council organises the annual Nature Week, which aims to encourage as many people as possible to experience the open air. The Council also manages the “Green Shoots” labelling scheme for nurseries and kindergartens, which promotes a green and healthy culture from an early age.

By collaborating with its member organisations, the Council ensures that outdoor recreational opportunities are inclusive and cater to a wide range of interests and abilities. Its core belief is that engagement with the natural environment is integral to individual health and community well being.

The Danish Outdoor Council plays a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of outdoor life, advocating policies and practices that promote outdoor activity while protecting nature and the environment.
